Alaska Airlines

My flight yesterday on Alaska Airlines prompted some comments. At the airport I noticed I'd forgotten my headphones so I picked up a small set of ear-buds. The purchase turned out to be a good choice since there is no in-air entertainment system on the 737-900 jet I was on. They advertise a DVD/CD/MP3 player for rent if arrangements are made in advance. The jet was clean, new and quite nice. The flight crew left something to be desired. The snippy flight attendant informed me that although she could see that the ear buds were off they had to be taken out of my ears and "stowed" for takeoff. I use my headphones as ear-plugs during takeoff and landing...

Seattle, Washington

I'm in Seattle for the next few days. The CALI conference is going on at the University of Washington Law School. With all of the recent moves and trips to and fro it is a bit disorienting being back in Seattle for the first time in more than a decade. I have to say, though, that if one were prone to living in the city that Seattle is definitely a place to consider. Actually I think Vancouver Washington and Vancouver B.C. would also be great places to consider. San Francisco (next week's trip) is better known for its hills than Seattle but the two are on par. The sponsors of the conference were kind enough to include an umbrella in the conference materials.

Delays mount at McCarran

Upon arriving home at McCarran airport this morning the flight crew had a not-so-welcome piece of news. Travelers are being told to be at the airport at least three hours prior to their flights when leaving Las Vegas. The FAA'sLas Vegas McCarran International Airport shows the current status and the lines didn't look too bad. The security line for the "D" gates looked like it might take 30-45 minutes. When I left on Thursday afternoon it took about 20 minutes to go from the parking garage to the gate (with a pre-printed b

Good morning Las Vegas

Good morning from a cloudy Las Vegas. We flew in last night on Allegiant airlines. it is definitely the cattle car approach to flying. Pack as many people as humanly possible in a Boeing MD-82. It is however, a great service and it is great to be able to fly directly from Fort Collins again. It does remind me however, of a problem with airline seats and the 12-inch PowerBook. The problem is the back of the seat in front of you when reclined will catch the top edge of the computer and tends to compress the screen.

Departing for Denver

In Las Vegas at McCarran Airport awaiting the winged chariot to carry us home to Denver. It's been a wonderful few days. I didn't get as much done on some of my PHP projects as I should have but I'll catch up on the flight and at home tonight. Still have a broken knob on the fireplace so there will be no fire, but there will be dogs to keep the feet warm. I'm trying to upload pictures now but they keep stalling. Some pictures show Las Vegas as the city prepares for the New Year's celebration. It's been cold out west. The longer we stay the colder it gets. The song of the moment is Simon and Garfunkel's Homeward Bound. Less than two MB has transfered and it says it's getting all of 2.3KB/s.... pictures will have to wait until later. Otherwise I've been pretty impressed with the cell connection this trip.

35K and going

Good Morning from 35,000 feet. I love morning flights across the Rockies. First the airport is empty when you arrive so the trip through security is much faster than later in the day. Once you leave the ground the air has not yet had the time to heat unevenly so the chances of turbulance in the air are greatly reduced. Finally there are beautiful sunrises like this morning. The clouds to the east of the Rockies were packed in tight. Like a knife edge the mountains cut the clouds and the only vestiage of such a complete carpet on the western side was a hazy morning dew. (I didn't bring the CF reader with me in the cabin so the picture will have to come later).
