The West Wing

Dave Winer asks today "Does Rumsfeld read Scripting News?" The query runs parallel to a thought I had last night after watching The West Wing. I was hoping that there are people inside the oval office watching. The writers for the show seem to have a much better grasp of what is happening in Gaza than do the current occupants of the White House. The show did a fantastic job of presenting the complexity the situation and touching on the plight of the individuals caught up in the situation.

Firepower photos

The Sierra Tarn Gallery has photos from the 2004 Firepower Demonstration on the Nellis AFB range today. A spectacular show including a complete combat search and rescue (CSAR) demonstration. Thanks to the Air Force for allowing us to attend.

College athletics to get stronger requirements

UNLV officials today lauded the new standards that will go into effect in the 2005-2006 season. In an era where sex and drugs have been the preferred recruiting tools of the likes of the University of Colorado it's refreshing to see schools like UNLV supporting what one NCAA official called "reforms that are critically necessary to ensuring that student-athletes are academically successful."

Amazing....

It's amazing that the Bush campaign is attacking the wartime record of Senator Kerry. A group of people who did everything they could to avoid serving their country on the front lines and who have the military so ill prepared for deployment that according to CNN "U.S. troops [are] buying own armor for Iraq duty., want to debate whether a soldier, injured in battle, was injured badly enough for a purple heart.

The top 100

The US News rankings of graduate schools came out yesterday. Our own UNLV Boyd School of Law ranks in the top 100 for the first time. Congratulations to all who put so much work into building the school into a prominent school so quickly.

The spin machine

I usually turn to NPR because I expect to get a balanced approach to stories. Certainly there will be people with agendas and times they will miss the mark. Unfortunately NPR proved this week they are no different when it comes to the spin machine. After more than 24 years of hosting Morning Edition Bob Edwards was tossed out by NPR this week. No reasons have been given other than wanting to take the show in a new direction. The NPR spin makes it sound like Edwards wanted to leave. Perhaps NPR should explore taking the show in a new direction - back to its roots.
