The new chapter

Today begins a new chapter. For the past few days I've been awaking earlier as the anticipation builds. In a few weeks I'll be leaving the Colorado spring behind. It will be replaced with the bloom of a desert spring. I'm leaving the place I've called home for the last decade to become the Director of Information Technology for the Boyd School of Law at UNLV. I have learned so many valuable lessons from the people I've had the opportunity to work with at StorageTek and EDS. I will miss greatly the great people who I've come to know on the Larimer County Search and Rescue team as well as the Larimer County Sheriff's Department and support team. Thank you all for helping make me ready for the next step.

It would be much harder to leave were it not for the wonderful group of people I'll be joining in Las Vegas. Each of my meetings with the people of the law school has shown me a kind of energy and enthusiasm that exists in few other places. It is a place, filled with distinguished people at all levels, that combines the energy, enthusiasm, and nothing can stop us attitude of a start-up company with the finest of academic scholarship and exploration.

Do you censor your blog? The question is an interesting one. I'd put it in a bit different terms.... How do you censor your own blog? There are undoubtedly things that blog authors think of but for a variety of reasons they get left out of their blog.

Barnett needs to go

Being close to the epicenter of the CU scandal we hear a lot about it each day. The deal right now with coach Barnett is that he continues to earn about $114 an hour. There does not need to be an extensive investigation to understand he finds it appropriate to respond to a young woman's rape allegations with statements about her playing ability. Nor will it take weeks to uncover that, once caught, he gave a hollow apology that shows he doesn't understand that his original statements were inappropriate. It is time for the leadership of the University of Colorado to step up and remove Barnett. He continues to be paid as an "investigation" goes on into the program.

Communications 101

A lot has happened up the road at the University of Colorado this week. The allegations are terrible. If but a small portion of them are true it leads one to believe that major changes are needed. Is CU the only school with such transgressions? I doubt it. It doesn't make it acceptable but it should be a clear message to other programs to get their houses cleaned up. It has been very disturbing to listen to the Buff's coach this week. Even after being suspended his comments suggest he doesn't get it. He said "I sincerely regret that yesterday a portion of my remarks were either misinterpreted or taken ... aired out of context. I apologize for answering that question in a manner where I must have come across as insensitive."

Day Care Research

The New York Times reports that a study has just been published suggesting center-based care is having a positive effect on children's intellectual and social development. The study's findings differ from many previous studies. It will be interesting to see how things play out.

SCO's moving

The SCO Group made a very public show of changing the IP address of their www server. Yesterday when it was "down" it was not providing an address. The name servers on their network were reachable and were responding but did not provide a response to the request for an address for www.sco.com.

Maybe I'm not a prude

I thought the halftime show tonight was terrible. It was sleazy, cheap and utterly lacked class. Evidently the NFL agrees. Thankfully they took the high road and issued a statement before the game ended.

I just found out from watching the news that I missed the "event" that they were talking about. Janet Jackson did more than 'dirty dancing' and revealed her breast at the end of the show. If this is the sole complaint then I'm afraid they have missed the point. CBS and the NFL were at the rehearsals earlier in the week according to our local news.

Last Year

I remember the morning a year ago so very well. Just as I remember the morning of January 28, 1986. A year ago I was leaving the house to meet with a client in Loveland. The news had a brief story about the return of Columbia that played while I was in the shower. As I left the house the first indications of problems hit NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday. On that winter morning a year ago seven astronauts from around the globe lost their lives. It would take months for NASA's leadership to admit that something could have been done to prevent the tragedy.

Study finds farmed fish polluted

A study in the current issue of Science reports that the levels of PCB's found in farmed salmon were greater than those of wild salmon. An article in the New York Times does not mention any findings about lead or mercury contamination. What does this mean for those of us who use fish oil in supplement form in an attempt to reduce exposure to some of these toxins?

It's cooooold!

It's cold out. Like Colorado winters used to be many years ago.... the kind we haven't seen for a few years. There is an interesting change when people read negative numbers. When a weather forecaster on the radio gives the expected low temperatures they normally say 25 and 29 degrees or something similar. When the forecast involves negative numbers they reverse them. They state the low will be between 0 and -6.
